π What Is VocaWiki?
VocaWiki is a dark-mode wiki dedicated to documenting the language of the internet β the words, phrases, and cultural concepts that define how people communicate online and in real life today.
We cover four major areas:
- Gen Z Slang β Words like rizz, delulu, sigma, and aura farming that originated online and now define a generation's vocabulary
- Anime & Japanese Loanwords β Terms like kawaii, senpai, tsundere, and otaku that crossed from Japanese culture into global internet language
- Meme & Internet Culture β Phenomena like brainrot, doomscrolling, stan culture, and skibidi that shaped how we interact online
- Voice & Pronunciation β Because knowing how to say these words matters as much as knowing what they mean
π How We Define Words
Every entry on VocaWiki follows a consistent structure designed to give you full context β not just a quick definition:
Full Definition
What the word actually means, in plain language that doesn't require existing knowledge
Real Origin
Where the word actually came from β not myths or guesses, but the traceable cultural source
Real Examples
How the word is actually used in conversation, TikTok, anime, and online β not made-up scenarios
Pronunciation Guide
IPA notation plus plain-English breakdown so you can say it correctly, not just read it
Related Terms
Connected words so you can explore the full web of internet language, not just isolated words
Cultural Context
Why this word matters β what cultural moment, platform, or movement gave it life
π¨ Design Philosophy
VocaWiki is built dark β intentionally. The dark aesthetic isn't just a style choice; it's a signal. This is not your grandmother's dictionary. This is a wiki built for people who live online, who know what a For You Page is, who've argued about whether tsundere or yandere is the superior archetype at 2am.
We took design inspiration from three sources:
- Wikipedia β for structural depth and the commitment to comprehensive, well-organized information
- Urban Dictionary β for the energy and voice that respects informal language as legitimate
- KnowYourMeme β for the cultural archaeology approach to documenting internet phenomena
Then we wrapped it in a modern SaaS-inspired dark UI, because the words we're documenting deserve a home that feels as current as they are.
β Content Principles
Everything we publish follows these principles β no exceptions.
β Frequently Asked Questions
Is VocaWiki affiliated with Urban Dictionary?
No. VocaWiki is an independent project. We're inspired by UD's spirit but operate independently with our own editorial standards and structure.
How do you decide which words to add?
We prioritize words that have crossed from niche internet communities into broader cultural usage β words you'd encounter on TikTok, YouTube, Twitter/X, or in real conversation with Gen Z or anime fans.
Are the pronunciation guides accurate?
We use IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) notation which is the global standard for phonetic transcription. For Japanese words, we note both the accurate Japanese pronunciation and the commonly accepted English-adopted version. See our full Pronunciation Guide and Anime Voice Expressions pages.
Why dark mode only?
Because it's the right aesthetic for the content. Also because most people reading about internet language are doing so at 2am. We're considerate like that.
Can I suggest a word to add?
VocaWiki is continuously growing. The internet keeps generating language faster than anyone can document it. Stay tuned β more entries are always coming.
