Otaku refers to someone with an intense, obsessive interest in anime, manga, video games, and Japanese pop culture. In Western internet culture, it's largely a positive self-identifier — a badge worn proudly by fans of Japanese media.
In Japan, however, the word carries more complex connotations. It originally referred to people who were so absorbed in their hobbies that they rarely left home — a socially negative stereotype. The meaning has softened significantly over time, especially among younger Japanese people who use it more casually.
🌱 Japanese Origin Explanation
The word "otaku" (おたく) originally meant "your home/house" — a formal second-person pronoun. In the 1980s, it became slang for obsessive hobbyists who stayed home consumed in their interests. Writer Akio Nakamori used it in a 1983 article describing anime fans at events, and the term stuck.
The word gained dark connotations in Japan after the 1989 Miyazaki Tsutomu case — a violent criminal who was described by media as an "otaku." This stigmatized the term severely in Japan for years. However, by the 2000s and 2010s, anime and manga became hugely mainstream worldwide, and "otaku" was reclaimed as a positive identity.

Modern otaku culture is a multi-billion dollar industry. Akihabara in Tokyo — the "Electric Town" — is the global epicenter, packed with anime merchandise shops, maid cafes, game centers, and figure stores. Anime conventions (Comiket, Anime Expo, Japan Expo) draw hundreds of thousands of otaku annually.
