POV stands for "Point of View." In internet culture — especially on TikTok and YouTube Shorts — it's used as a video format where the creator acts out a scene from the viewer's perspective. The viewer is placed in a specific role or situation.
A typical POV video starts with a caption like "POV: You're the new kid at school and the most popular person talks to you." The creator then acts as that popular person, speaking directly to the camera (and therefore to you, the viewer).
The shift: POV originally meant simply "point of view shot" in filmmaking. TikTok transformed it into an interactive storytelling genre where millions of people could be the main character for 60 seconds.

The POV format on social media evolved from literary and filmmaking use of the term, but its current internet meaning was turbocharged by TikTok's For You Page (FYP) algorithm starting around 2019–2020.
Creators discovered that POV videos were extremely engaging — putting the viewer directly in the story created an immersive, almost theatrical experience. The format spread to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and Twitter threads.

"POV: you forgot to do the assignment" captioned over someone having a meltdown. The POV just sets a relatable scene for comedic effect.
Documentary POV
"POV: you're watching me make pasta at 2am" — casual slice-of-life content framed as a first-person experience.
